I have always loved to study the word of God but for a very long time, I did not fully understand the depth and sheer importance of the truth found in the word. I would sometimes study but not get a good grasp of what I studied. This narrative changed when the Holy Spirit began to open my eyes to what the word of God actually represents.

There is a saying that if the worth of a thing is not known, abuse is inevitable. Likewise, if we don’t quite understand the power that exists in the word of God, our interaction with it would be suboptimal at best.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God”. -John 1:1

“He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which He is called is the Word of God”. -Revelation 19:13

The Word was with God in the beginning, and the Word was God himself. How exciting! This literarily means that the Word of God is God himself. Also, in Revelation 19:13, the name by which He is called is the Word of God. I pray that God will open our understanding to this profound truth. I strongly believe that if we understand this, our engagement with the word of God will undergo a radical transformation.

To grow in our knowledge of God, we need to go back into the Word. Not only do we need to go back to the word but we also should trust God for a revelation of what His word represents. If God himself holds His own word in very high esteem, how much more should we also do so.  Psalm 138:2 says “I will worship toward Your holy temple, and praise your name for Your lovingkindness and Your truth; for you have magnified your word above all Your name”. All of creation came into being by the word of God. The bible records that all things were made through Him, and without Him, was not any thing made that was made John 1:3. The universe is upheld by the word of His power. Hebrews 1:3. That is how powerful the word of God is.

The Word of God is not a compilation of some ancient histories and definitely not just ink on paper “all scripture is God-breathed and is profitable for instruction, for conviction, for correction, and for training in righteousness”. 2 Timothy 3:16. If we believe this to be true, we would never again hesitate to go into the word for instruction in our day to day life. The word of God gives direction and is capable of shining light to every dark path. If you are not sure of the way to go, try going to the word. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Psalm 119:105

The Word is Spirit

It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. John 6:63.

The word of God is not ordinary. It is the instrument that the Holy spirit uses to give life. There is life-giving power inherent in the Word of God. Power capable of healing and of bringing life to every dead situation. “He sent His word and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction” Psalm 107:2. The word of God is spirit and the Bible says that those who worship God must worship Him in spirit and in truth. The spirit of the word of God engages with our spirit each time we study the word. When we are faced with a situation, we first need to go into the word of God, and see what His word says concerning that situation. Hold on to the word and run with it. One thing is certain, His words cannot fail. “For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it”. Isaiah 55:10-11.

The Word is Living and Active

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account. Hebrews 4:12

The word of God is active, dynamic and not static. The same scripture could bring solution to different problems at the same time. The word has the ability to penetrate into the deepest parts of our being, discerning our thoughts and intentions and bringing lasting change. If there is any change we are believing God for, in us , our spouse, family or any situation, we need to go into the word. Only the word of God has the ability to bring about lasting change. We should endeavor to lay down our guards and allow the word to accomplish the purpose of God.

The two edged sword is said to be the sharpest in history and the word of God is even sharper. The Bible tells us in 2 Corinthians 10:3-4 that “Though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds”. Likewise, Ephesians 6:17 says “and take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God”. The word of God is our weapon for spiritual warfare.

Prayer: Lord, we thank you for your word that became flesh and dwelt among us. We pray that you open our eyes of understanding and reveal to us the power in your word. Amen.
