Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth forever. 1 Peter 1:23

The word of God can be likened to a seed. Not an ordinary seed or a perishable one for that matter, but a spiritual and imperishable seed. We receive salvation through the seed of the word sown into our hearts, producing faith that is needed to receive the free gift of salvation. The scripture says, “if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved” Romans 10:9. For the word of God to yield the result we desperately need, we first need to plant the seed in our hearts. When you plant a seed in the natural, it might take days, weeks or even years before you see it sprout depending on the type of seed you plant. This does not mean that the seed is not growing the whole time. It only means that there is a process involved in growing a seed. A seed that is not planted cannot undergo this process and ultimately cannot be harvested. The law of seedtime and harvest can never be violated. We see this in Genesis 8:22 where God says “While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night shall not cease”. We plant the seed of His word in our heart when we study the word, meditate on it, confess it and believe it.

We plant the seed of whatever fruit we would like to harvest. A seed always produces after its own kind. If we plant apples, we reap apples and not tomatoes. “And the earth brought forth grass, the herb that yields seed according to its kind, and the tree that yields fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind. And God saw that it was good“. Genesis 1:12. When faced with a situation, the first step is to go back into the word of God and see what the word says about that particular situation. For example, if you are believing God for healing, the scripture says “But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed. Isaiah 53:5. If you are believing for finances, the scripture says “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich”. 2 Corinthians 8:9. These scriptures are incorruptible seeds, plant them by meditating on them, confessing and believing them. The word of God never fails and these scriptures will accomplish their purpose in you. “For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, and do not return there, but water the earth, and make it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it” Isaiah 55:10.

In Mark chapter 4, Jesus Christ taught His disciples the parable of the sower. This is one of my favorite parables in the scriptures. Not only because i’m fascinated with the idea of growth as manifested by a seed but also because Jesus told them that they need to understand this parable in other to understand all the other parables. “Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables? Mark 4:13. The sower in this parable sowed a lot of seeds, some fell on the wayside, stony ground, amidst thorns and others on good ground. Only the seeds that fell on the good ground germinated and produced multiple folds of fruit. Mark 4:3-8. Jesus Christ further explained this parable saying “The sower sows the word” Mark 4:14 and the different types of ground the seeds fell on are our hearts.

The word of God is like a seed destined to be planted on the ground of our hearts. Just as a seed has to remain in the ground over a period of time to germinate, the word of God has to abide in us to produce a harvest beyond our imaginations. Keep sowing the word!
